Gaudi's sculptural style of architecture animated the early 20th-century beaux-arts look -- his buildings swell and curve like breathing animals. A quiet, unassuming man of simple tastes, to judge by his residence in what is now Park Guell, Gaudi possessed an extraordinary imagination plus the ability to realize it. Among the many amazing but simple things he did was to hang a network of strings, which, when viewed upside down, served as the model for the support structure of the Sagrada Familia. Catenary curves turn out to be the lightest and strongest architectonic elements.
