The sands of the Gobi Desert form waves, dunes, and occasionally semi-circular inscriptions traced by the tips of wind-blown grasses, as if meant to be seen from above, like the patterns at Nazca. Camels, indispensable companions of the desert, stride purposefully with their curious swaying gait, covering vast distances. At the end of the day, they kneel down to discharge their cargo or rider, folding their front and back knees like contortionists. The Gobi is a desert like none other -- vast lakes in the middle of it, enough vegetation for wild horses to survive on, a 300-km mountainous sand dune called the Mongol Els; which, when you slide down it, sounds like an airplane -- very odd in a place where the only air traffic consists of eagles.
