The pastoral fantasy has a special appeal for people caught up in the rush of city life. Every nation keeps its own version of the pastoral close to its heart, even as its people continue to crowd into cities. French painters depicted an Arcadia based on classical models, and English landscape designers set about re-building it. Gertrude Jekyll created the Victorian English country garden, and even placed one in France, near Dieppe, Bois de Moutiers. Monet built his own floral dreamscape at Giverny and painted endless variations on it. In Italy, an Umbrian hill town looking out on olive groves symbolizes another pastoral ideal. The Japanese cherry-blossom reverie celebrates the rural virtues of harmony, peace, plenty, and renewal. Japan has recently (2008) issued a new series of Furusato postage stamps celebrating its rural hometowns. In Nepal, cascading waves of grain in terraced fields mark the landscape; a water buffalo stares at passersby as if they are long-lost relatives.
